If you’re concerned that your child has asthma, you’re not alone. Approximately 6 million children 17 and younger in the United States have asthma. At Blue Ridge Ear, Nose, and Throat, Inc., our team of otolaryngologists will collaborate with your family to ensure your child receives effective and personalized asthma treatment. We’re dedicated to making sure they can fully appreciate childhood fun rather than being hindered by uncomfortable symptoms.
What Is Pediatric Asthma?
When a child has asthma, their lungs and airways become inflamed by certain triggers like inhaling pollen or catching a cold. This can make it difficult to breathe.
What Causes Childhood Asthma?
Causes of pediatric asthma are not fully understood, and sometimes it may occur with no apparent trigger. Potential factors include:
- Genetics
- Lung infections
- Environmental factors such as cigarette smoke or air position
- Upper respiratory diseases such as sinusitis and rhinitis
What Are the Symptoms of Asthma?
- Difficulty breathing or sleeping
- Frequent coughing triggered by viral infections, exercise, cold air or while sleeping
- A wheezing or whistling sound when exhaling
- Congestion or tightness in the chest
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
How Is Asthma Diagnosed in Children?
A diagnostic appointment with an ENT may include a discussion of symptoms, physical exam, lung function tests using a peak flow meter or spirometer, allergy skin testing, x-rays and CT scan. Your doctor will make sure your child feels comfortable during this process.
What Treatments Are Available?
Our ENTs will work with your family to create a personalized treatment plan for your child’s needs with the goal of reducing and preventing symptoms, as well as providing relief during an asthma attack.
Potential treatment options include preventative and quick-relief medications, lifestyle remedies such as reducing pet danger and regularly changing furnace or air conditioning filters, and allergy treatment.
Asthma attacks can feel scary, but our team can help your family manage them. We’ll work together to make sure your child feels safe and healthy.
